My sisters and I are planning on buying my Father a new Camera for Father's Day and his Birthday.

He currently uses an older 35mm Minolta, which he seems to like. Does anyone have any suggestions on a 35mm or would it be better to step into a nice digital camera.

Do the Digital line camera's even compare to the 35mm features?

Print quality?

I used the HP Photosmart 1000 printer on my Canon Powershot s300 2.2 megapixel camera and the quality was still not close to that of a good 35mm.

Does anyone have any hands on expierence or helpful insight on this?

I use an HP 1115 color printer to print pics on HP Photo Premium Plus Paper. Printing from a digital camera to photo paper is outstanding... even 8X10. You couldn't tell the difference. However, scanning a pic, then printing it on paper, loses a little quality.

If you want to stop by and see some samples, let me know.

Oh, and the Sony DSC S75 is the digi cam I use. They're under $500 from ecost.com. You can probably get one from ebay for $300.

I have had my Nikon N50, which is more or less the same as the current N60, for 5 years and if I had to buy one today I would buy the same thing.

If I went analog, I would definitely stick with Nikon. Perhaps the Nikon N66? LOL. No such thing. But yes, definitely Nikon.

However, you'd be surprised to find out how well digital cameras actually work in manual mode. You can adjust f-stop, aperature, etc, to take custom pics.

All a matter of preference. If your dad likes developing his pics, or likes the fun, challenge (or grief) of manual SLR's, then stick with analog.

However, if your dad is not going to print pics larger than 11X17 (gosh, who on earth would?), and isn't fond about stuffing pics into a photo album that nobody will ever look at, then digital is the way to go. You can pick and choose WHICH photos to keep, WHICH photos to print, and you can even email a pic to aunt betty in Memphis. Plus you can even capture movies! Forgot about that benefit.

Thanks for all the input, it helps.
How do you know I about my Aunt?

Ok, so far I like the Nikon N66 for analog, any suggestions for a digital?
Manual features are neccessary.

I was just kidding with the Nikon N66... I think it's a Nikon N60... it's an inside joke between Gary Pappas (Partickus) and myself, because I thought he made up that there was a Nikon N60 (at the time there was only a Nikon N70 and N90... the N60 is in between the two.

I guessed about the aunt in Memphis. Do you really have an aunt in Memphis? If so, I should be a soothsayer.

Sorry Dino, but I was kidding on both... I saw the N60 on ebay and it looks pretty nice! I mean N66.

Just an update on the camera situation. Thanks for all the advice as we did end up buying the Nikon N65 Camera. It's a very nice camera and works extremely well. Thanks again!
